Fire Alarm Compliance at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport

Customer

Opened in 1953, the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is a major public airport in Broward County, Florida, and is one of three airports serving the Miami metropolitan area. The airport consists of 21 buildings and employs 18,000 people. It is near cruise line terminals at Port Everglades and is popular among tourists bound for the Caribbean. FLL has over 700 daily flights to 135 domestic and international destinations.

We have been supporting the airport with the installation, maintenance and testing of the entire fire alarm system for over 31 years and have completed over 60 projects in that time, plus performed all annual maintenance and testing. Future work we hope to participate in includes a new terminal 5 with 2 concourses, modernization of terminals 2 & 3, a new on-site hotel and a people mover system.

Project Requirements

Ensure all systems are code- compliant by upgrading the entire fire alarm system while providing an overall solution that allows faster threat identification and response during an emergency event.

Sciens Scope

Over the years, we have helped the airport upgrade all fire alarm systems throughout the property, installing and maintaining 20,000+ devices and bringing all systems to an integrated head-end workstation where operators have full visibility in an emergency event allowing for a swift and effective response. The Notifier product by Honeywell, including the Onyx Works integrated head-end, has allowed us to provide one complete and fully code-compliant system. We have worked thousands of hours with the design engineers to ensure the customer is receiving the very best code-compliant designs and system installation while ensuring the systems are annually tested in accordance with local requirements.

Outcome

The Notifier system, combined with our design, installation and service expertise, has provided the airport with a reliable and effective fire alarm system for many years. The architecture of this system has provided the foundation for future expansion while continuing to provide the benefits of a fully integrated system. This will ensure the airport continues to receive effective transparency during an emergency event and that the system helps to keep the building occupants safe. Additionally, first responders receive timely and accurate information to minimize any threat.
